Private IKS, worth the risk?

by admin on Jan.08, 2010, under Uncategorized

Recently there have been files posted on many sites which work with a number of ethernet enabled receivers which would not otherwise have IKS support.  They advertise signing up for a private IKS system to use the flash.  A number of receivers are supported including but not limited to Coolsats, Neosats, and nFusion (which had a public IKS until recently but it has been shut down for about the last month).  This seems all well and good then doesn’t it?

Well let’s take a moment to think about risk assessment.

Scenario 1:  As an end user, if you use a free public IKS system then you have a low level of personal risk for usage of that system.  First the authorities would have to find the subscriber supplying the data from subscription equipemt for the IKS, then they must find the servers transmitting the datafeed, and they must get warrants to confiscate both (or raid… which ever term you prefer).  Only after confiscating the servers transmitting the datafeed and access any logs which the servers may have (as servers can be set not to log connections), then they must take those accessing IP’s trace them to providers, subpeona the provider companies for user data, and then head to court.  In the end its a pretty shaky case for end user prosecution with a lot of leg work and paperwork the authorities will need monthes or years to put together.

Scenario 2:  Private IKS user subscribes to a private IKS and uses their checking account or credit card to pay the owner of the Private IKS system for access for their receiver(s).  Authorities track down the subscriber providing the subscription data, then the server broadcasting the datafeed.  Having netted the server and tracing down it’s owner they find that all the accesses of the private system have attached payment information.  Now their is minimal legwork, they just subpoena the payment records from the financial institution accepting the payment, connect each account to the access records… and Voila! end users end up in court.  With a clear payment record attached to receiving an illegal or grey market product.  The case is not shaky, the legwork is minimal, and the end users are the ones in hot water!

Private IKS… worth risk? …Not to me.

N3 Rumor Updates

by admin on Nov.08, 2009, under N3 Rumors

First some N3 facts:

All FTA receivers which do not have IKS support (ethernet port on receiver and broadband internet connection required) are no longer working to receive Dishnet or BEV.  Many of the most popular brands have Telefonica fixes going, but this is not much use unless you speak fluent spanish.  You can still use any FTA receiver to get true FTA signals (unecrypted broadcasts).

Card sharing is working, if you have a compatible Dishnet or BEV receiver and an AVR board you should look into this.  If you do not have those items already do a lot of reading before spending any money to get them.

There have been a lot of rumors flying around about emminent releases of working N3 files for FTA receivers (… viewsats), and repeatedly people have been disappointed with the outcome (or lack thereof).  It is unlikely that there will be a stand alone file released for any FTA receiver any time soon.  If you have been holding off on buying an IKS system because you think that there will be a file for your receiver then you have only been depriving yourself of TV viewing.  All of the IKS supported receivers will still work if a stand alone file is released, its not a waste of money to upgrade to something that works now, it will still be working even if your existing hardware comes back online.

Please use the comments section to add any rumors you have heard or read.  We will research any reasonable rumors posted for validity.
